New Stuff for Cool Girls: M.A.C. Face and Body Foundation

This is a thorough review on M.A.C.'s Face & Body Foundation that I've been working on for a while, I wanted to provide you with all the information I could and all the little details I've noticed about the product, so sorry if it's quite lengthy! Hopefully this gives you everything you need to know so you can try it if you're interested. Now, onto the good stuff...

I've been in this dewy phase for a long time now, I started with Revlon ColorStay which I loved at first but once I started using it everyday for a while I realized it didn't give me the finish or color I was looking for. I then moved to Maybelline Fit Me Liquid Foundation and it was too oily and slippery. It didn't last on my skin throughout working and running around during the day, so this didn't work for me either. I never have owned a high street brand of foundation such as MAC just because I'm a believer that you can find equally great products without spending heaps of money. Face & Body was different though, for the amount of product, quality, and price it's the best deal and the best foundation I've used as of now. I don't want to be too positive saying "Oh this is the greatest foundation on earth!" I'm just sure it's the best one for my needs that I've tried so far.

This formula is only available at MAC stores (this means they don't carry it at places like Nordstroms) and retails for $32. This might seem pricey, but compared to the extremely large amount of product (4 fl. ounces). In comparision to other high street foundations; Nars Sheer Glow and Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation retail at $42 for 1 fl. ounce, it's actually a really good deal. Via makeupalley.com it's currently rated a 4.0 out of 5 and 70% of reviewers would purchase again. There are many shades available which is a double edged sword in the sense that you've got a lot of choice, but too many choices can get a little overwhelming for some. I've taken about 3 weeks of using this product everyday to give it a true, and thorough review. I was looking for a few key things for this makeup to provide me with, those are; a natural finish, builable coverage for acne spots / hyperpigmentation, true water-resistance, and a clean formula (as in it doesn't cause me more breakouts, etc.)

Here's what I found out:

• Although it's best to get samples of maybe two shades to choose from, I just went in and asked them to match a shade that would best match my chest / body (my face is a little lighter than the rest of me) and it turned up being the perfect match. If your overwhelmed by the array of shades just ask an associate to help you, simple. Face & Body was exactly what I was looking for in terms of shade match.
• I've applied this with both my fingers and a foundation brush and I've noticed that when using my fingers it gives a more natural finish, I think this is a result of the heat that's created when your fingers are massaging the product into the skin. This allows the product to sort of melt into my face, which left me with a really sheer, pretty, true skin finish. When applied using a foundation brush (RealTechniques Foundation Brush) it provides more coverage, I find this helpful if I'm having a particular issue with breakouts because it pops more product onto the needed area without leaving a cakey residue. 
• Just because those are the only two application techniques I've tried there's tons of ways to apply your makeup and you're sure to find one that does exactly what you need it to do. Some other ways off application of this makeup are; a wet sponge like the Beauty Blender or something similar, or flat top brush, Sonia Kashuk / e.l.f. have one that people rave about (I'm going to try one of these next). You can get these brushes from Target for under $10. 
• You will need to set it with a powder because it leaves a sort of tacky consistency on the skin if you don't. I kind of like this because it makes me feel like it's really sticking to my skin and will adhere to anything else I might apply. I have used BareMinerals Mineral Veil and Fit Me Powder. Both are working well. I apply after I've applied all my other face makeup.
• I've noticed I don't need a concealer when I wear this, it evens everything out so well that my under eye circles have seemed to disappear. 
• Applying e.l.f.'s Mineral Infused Primer onto my skin 2 minutes before application helps adhere the makeup to my skin and elongates the lasting power.

PROS

• Long lasting
• Really blendable, and sheer
• Can be built up to cover problem areas 
• Huge amount of product for the price and quality
• Water-resistant
• Good match with my skin [C4]
• Perfect natural finish
• Photographs beautifully, doesn't white out the face or create strange tones in pictures
• Clean, hygienic product dispense
• Doesn't dry darker on dry patches / get blotchy

CONS

• Funky smell
• Not the best if you need FULL coverage (but it does provide sufficient coverage for my acne and dark spots)
• Watery consistency (this can be a pro or a con, I think it's good because it blends really easily, if it were any thicker it would be hard to move around the skin and dry uneven)
• It's notorious for seperating in the bottle, this doesn't compromise the quality of the product as long as you just shake shake shake before applying! 
• As for red spots, I do need to apply concealer. I noticed it's difficult to cover redness with this product.

I'm really in love with this foundation. It does everything I need it to and has all of the qualities I look for in a formula. I give this a 5 out of 5 rating for quality, price, formula, shade, overall product. I recommend this for people who have similar wants from their foundation as I do. At least run to you nearest MAC store and get a sample just to see how you like it!

Goldstone Mother

My mom and I keep making plans to head over to the mall and check out the MAC counter. Unfortunately, our schedules conflict so much it hasn't happened in some time...I now know this was for a purpose. That purpose? MAC Semi-Precious Collection's Mineralise Skin Finish in Goldstone was made for my mother. Let me explain...

The reason we were heading to the MAC counter initially was because my mom was always asking about how I got my skin to "glow", I explained how I recently fell in love with MAC's Cream Colour Base in Pearl and it's now a staple in my makeup regimine. And that I was needing to kill my lem for MAC's Face & Body Foundation (review to come soon!). I wanted her to get a piece of the pie so we headed out to the counter. While walking up to the Cream Colour Base's a sales associate pops up and asks us if we need anything, my mom explains her situation and she brings my mothers attention to the loose pigments. (A bad idea for mature women) However, the sales associate didn't seem to think about that and readily popped on some pigment to my mothers cheekbones (which are amazing by the way) and says "Oh that looks great!". Mom turns around and I am suddenly noticing that she has wrinkles I'd never noticed before, I immediately turn her attention away from this product. I don't know if the MAC girl didn't quite understand what we were looking for but this was not it, our goal was to find her something to give a youthful glow. Not to accentuate features that otherwise are invisible. I turn my mother around to distract her from getting sucked into purchasing this, and point her attention to MAC's latest collection Semi-Precious. I really didn't think we'd find anything too amazing her but lo and behold Mineralise Skin Finish in Goldstone.

MAC describes this as having a brown base with a rosey pink, white and gold inner circle. I find this product especially wonderful because of it's double features. You have the warm shimmery bronze surrounding a perfect pink highlight or blush depending on application. Or you can mix the two for a customized cheek color. A $28 two-in-one limited edition product from MAC isn't so bad. There's also two other Mineralize Skin Finishes and a few other bits & bobs I'm sure you'll enjoy. Here's my beautiful mother wearing it! Notice how the light hits her cheek bones and gives that amazing glow. 

I definitely recommend this product for women over the age of 30 (and under as well!) it's so wearable and seems it would enhance both warm and cool undertones. I know a lot of mature women are a little hesitant when it comes to wearing shimmery makeup, it's been dubbed as something only young faces can wear, MAC has changed this concept with Goldstone. I think I'll have to get some of this for myself now (; Check out temptalia's review of this, she has amazing swatches and photos that'll give you a great idea of what your purchasing before you even decide to. Her link is here. Anything from the Semi-Precious Collection is sure to turn up a gem in your makeup bag...I had to heheheh (;

New Stuff for Cool Girls: e.l.f. haul

e.l.f. (eyes, lips, face) is a company sold at target and a couple other similar stores. Their prices are just about the cheapest you can get when it comes to makeup. Usually when we think of things being very cheap we also assume they're low quality or bad products. In the case of e.l.f. this is completely untrue. I did a little research on the company and here's what I found:

"e.l.f.'s philosophy is that beauty comes from within and it's our goal to enable every woman to look and feel her personal best through the perfect blend of both the inner and outer person. With that goal in mind, e.l.f. cosmetics was born - a line of simple, luxurious, problem-solution tools... We at e.l.f. believe that innovative technology, quality ingredients, and supurb delivery systems should not be limited to prestige retailers. Every woman should have the opportunity to participate in innovation, without sacrificing her budet."


I really liked this philosophy and it's very similar to mine; beauty comes from not only the outside but from an inner confidence and way of carrying one's self. I really do love this company and the products they produce. Upon reading a little about what others thought of the company I've learned that people do like some of their products but it's either a hit or miss with them, keep in mind this is with most cosmetic companies even high end. I'm going to be doing a day one review of the products I received from them. The items I received are:

• Mineral Infused Facial Primer 
• Luscious Liquid Lipstick [Strawberry]
• Contouring Blush & Bronzing Powder Duo
• Brightening Eyeshadow Quad [Drama]

This wasn't the full of my order, I had actually ordered a second Luscious Liquid Lipstick in Baby Lips, but it was out of stock. I also ordered the Studio Blusher in Peachy Keen which I was quite looking forward too, there was a bit of a billing discrepancy so that definitely brings down my feelings for the company. But I won't speak too soon, I might change my opinions on the company (only ordering from the web, this is not reflective of in-store products) depending on how the problem is resolved. I received this order a few weeks ago but I wanted a good amount of time for me to figure out how I felt about each product. Typically, I LOVE everything I get the first couple days I have it, but after the exciting part of having a new product wears off the true feelings come out. That is what I tried achieving with this order, and it seemed to work well!

Here's what I thought
Mineral Infused Facial Primer I have to admit this was the first primer I've ever owned. That being said, I was hoping I fall in love with it because everyone always speaks so highly of primers and how much they love them. Unfortunately, this product didn't sit well with me. It make tiny dry spots I frequently have look much more large and noticeable. Also, the staying power of my makeup wasn't really any different that when I didn't use a primer. So all in all this just came off as another step in the morning that I just don't have time for. If I'm going to try another primer, I think I'll go for a more hydrating primer formula. UPDATE: Change of plans! I just found using this under my M.A.C. Face & Body Foundation makes it last so much longer and creates a really nice base for the makeup to stick to. I totally changed my mind and use this everyday now. (;

Luscious Liquid Lipstick [Strawberry] What I love most about this is the moisturizing formula. Although, I wouldn't call it a lipstick, it's more of a pigmented lipgloss. So, aside from thinking it would be a little more opaque, I really fell in love with this. To make it last a little longer and be more opaque I put a base underneath it MAC Lipstick [Myth]. I love the color turnout (especially with a base). It's a great pop of color for summer and great to take with you on hot days when you're afraid your lipsticks might melt in your bag.

Contouring Blush & Bronzer Duo It's like this duo was made for me! The blush gives me a perfect pink peachy flush and the bronzer is just lovely. The only thing I will say that could be considered a con about this product is that the bronzer isn't my type of contour, I like my contour to be matte, which this is not. Both the blush and bronzer have flex of sparkle and some shimmer in them. But as a bronzer for days when I'm not in the mood for blush, it's an amazing color! It seems that this duo has potential to work well for a large array of skin tones, as long as you apply it the right way (if you have lighter skin, just be sure to apply with a light hand). This is a really great product that I definitely recommend. The price is amazing too!

Brightening Eye Shadow Quad [Drama] This quad contains the ingredients for a perfect, budget friendly smokey eye. If you're always playing guessing games when figuring out what to use for a smokey eye, this quad was made for you. It comes with four triangle shaped pots; a matte white, a shimmery silver, a darker gray with large sparkles, and a black with large sparkles. Unfortunately, I couldn't get a good photo of my swatches for this one and I don't really use these colors (I'm not a smokey eye kinda gal) so I don't have any photos of a look using this quad. The pigmentation is okay, for the price I didn't expect anything much better. But I do love the white, it's a great inner corner highlight. I also loved mixing the silver with the gray as an all over lid color. I apply this really lightly and it gives a really pretty turnout.

All in all I was happy with this order. I did end up receiving my missing products which I'll review in the future for you. I really enjoy e.l.f. products because they offer great items for amazing prices. They're a great brand if you're just starting to play in makeup and figure out what you like and what you don't. Remember to check makeupalley.com for reviews, they have just about every e.l.f. product reviewed on there with helpful insights and thoughts. Before I buy anything I always check it on MUA (however, don't not buy something you really think you'll love just because it got bad reviews, you never know, you might love something that's not too popular with others!)

Todays Face: Summer Skin

If you can't tell, I've become a little bit of a makeup addict. I'm always thinking about ways of perfecting things and color schemes. And I'm totally not one of those people who keeps all their beauty secrets to themselves, I think everyone should be given the opportunity to gain knowledge and I'm more than willing to share mine! I've been on a search to create the perfect summer glow, I'm really not one into the matte looks, and I've finally found something that satisfies me!

I've starting using some new products (the reviews for them can be found here). Although my skin is less than perfect at the moment (I'm in the process of fixing this) this new makeup regimen I've found is giving me the best results I've had so far. Be for warned, I like a really, and I mean really  dewy glowing face. So, if you're skin is oily you'll probably want to skip a step or two (I'll note which ones).

• Cleanse and pat dry (don't wipe) face. 
• Apply Dermologica or Skinceuticals moisturizer (any moisturizer you've found works for you will do). Let Soak into skin for a couple minutes.
• Massage whatever sunscreen you like, I use Banana Boat Sun Wear Faces SPF 30. It's oil free and has all this other good stuff for your skin. LOVE. *oily skin can just apply the sunscreen only, leaving out the other moisturizer.
• Apply two (2) parts Maybelline Fit Me Foundation in 220 with one (1) part Revlon Colorstay in 240, and one (1) part illuminating lotion (Skinceuticals Emollience is the one I use) *oily skin, skip the lotion mix. Apply a layer with Real Techniques Foundation Brush (review coming soon). 
• Pick up M.A.C. Cream Colour Base in Pearl with fingers and pat onto apples of cheeks and cheek bones. You'll also want to give this a little bit of time to melt into your skin for a more natural finish.
• Lightly dust a peachy blush with shimmer from your cheeks swept up to a little past the outside of the eye and a little into the hollows of the face, I used M.A.C. Sheertone Shimmer Blush in Springsheen. 
• Apply M.A.C. Cream Colour Base in Pearl again down the bridge of nose, inner corners of eyes, and browbones. If you want even more glow you can pop it over where you first applied it as well. (this is okay to do over a powder blush, you just have to make sure to set everything when finished, I'll get to how I do that) 
• Using a powder brush, apply a mineral bronzer to the hollows of the face, temples, jaw bone, and anywhere else you'd like a veil of color.
• Set everything with a powder like Fit Me Pressed Powder in 220.
• Spray all over face with Fix + for a fresh finish and to really set the makeup (if you're more on the oily side, skip this step and use a setting powder). 
• Put a couple coats of Maybelline Full'n'Soft mascara, I used soft brown.

My Favorite Summer Beauty Trends

LIPS
I'm not going to limit myself here my saying a few colors I like, instead I figured it'd be a bit more visually exciting and informative if I showed you! (although, at the moment I'm obsessing over corals, watermelon, and baby pinks, muted nudes and light pink!) Gosh, I can never just pick one.

(Note: The photos of the lovely ladies with fabulous lips were found on google, as for the rest, they are my photos. You are more then welcome to use them if need be, just be sure to site back here!)

NEUTRAL FACE
The way I do a neutral face is as follows. Refresh, moisturize, moisturize, moisturize, refresh, light layer of sheer foundation, touch of bronzer, sweep of highlight, vaseline mixed with a bronze eyeshadow (or just wet it if your scared of the vaseline...idk it works for me so I like it) on the lids, black mascara, and gloss. Done and perfect. There's nothing better and faster than fresh beautiful makeup that looks effortless and this is one of those looks for me that just works with my skin and look. This is a routine that never fails me, even on my bad days!

SWEET CHEEKS
M.A.C. Springsheen keeps looking at me from my vanity, sending me telepathic love letters. And I'm doing it back. I've fell in love with this blush all too hard. I love everything about it. Here's a few different ways I play with my new best friend:

• Popping on a light wash then bronzing and contouring, this gives for a bronzed and brown based face with a pop of freshness. 
• Another look is using many layers for a shimmering perfectly peach flush. 
• Finally, putting it on my eyes, I LOVE using this color as an eyeshadow just by itself with some brown mascara and barely anything else, perfect beach makeup.

Also, pairing this, or rather any blush, with M.A.C. Cream Colour Base in Pearl makes for the perfect glow. I'm wearing this duo in most all of my photos!

BOLD LASHES
I've always been a fan of lashes. The bigger the better is how I feel. Even when I go to the beach and wear no makeup at all, I still have at least 3 coats of thick mascara slathered on my lashes. Why? Because I like it, and that's that. Though I am not a fake lashes advocate for a number of reasons, those being, too much work, too artificial, and not to mention I just suck at applying. So, unless I'm going to an event or creating a dramatic look I'll never waste my money on false eyelashes. Plus, I just love my faithful black lashes, they take mascara perfectly and pretty much always are on their best behavior. (yes, I am referring to my lashes as an entity) 

PURPLE PEEPERS
From lavenders, to violet, to grapes and wines...purple eyeshadow has made its mark on my makeup love list. How do I like to wear it, you ask?

• Using deeper hues for a sexy, refreshed smokey 
• Lining the whole of the eye with a vibrant violet 
• Perfectly innocent periwinkle lids. 

Pairing any of these with huge black drama queen lashes just takes the cake for me! They're all lovely, and versatile (if you've got the colors!) My advice, start purchasing all different shades of purples and play with them. I promise you'll find one at least one color you fall in love with. *Always go drugstore first (even though I'm an advocate of almost ALL makeup being drugstore) when trying new colors, you can also pop over to your high end counters or Sephora and ask a beauty rep to give you a go around with your new squeeze. Hopefully these people know enough about makeup to provide you with a range of swatches where you'll find at least one love of your life.

MONOCHROMATIC MAKEUP
I say this really  meaning natural "naked" makeup. But since I hate saying naked makeup, cause if it were naked, we wouldn't be having to have this conversation...about makeup, I'm calling it monochromatic. There's only a few monochrom looks I would do personally and they're all relatively similar. Peach, coral, pink, brown, beige. That's it (YES, I know you can create other monochrome looks using bright not natural colors, but that's not what I'm talking about here). BUT the beauty you can create with these colors are amazing. I think using one color throughout the look gives a feeling of effortlessness and a light natural vibe. For my next FOTD I'll play around with a few monochromatic looks. I have no idea how they'll turn out but I hope I like them, and you too of course!

And another favorite of mine, Mila Kunis. This makeup seems to allow you to peer into her soul through her amazing eyes. Then again though, her eyes always intrigue me to create beautiful looks.

I know these aren't the only things everyone's loving at the moment, but I'm not one to follow on the tail of the latest trends. I like what I love and that's that! (; I am finding some trend of my own here for summer and that comes down to one word, effortlessness. Sexy, subdued, naturally gorgeous makeup will make anyone feel like a goddess of the sun.

Todays Face

Todays face was a request by a few fellow MUAers. The told me I would look lovely with a pinup styled makeup (red lips, cat liner), so last night before bed I gave it a try and I really liked it. This type of look for me definitely will take some confidence to actually wear it out in public because I feel like it's too harsh. Or maybe I could find a way of toning things down a bit. I always love doing request looks for some reason, so if anyone has any other ideas in mind let me know! Anyway, onto Todays Face!

Products Used:
(all other makeup other than the eyes and lips were from earlier in the day so it's all worn off and old. Therefore, I won't mention it, unless you guys ask then I'd be happy to)
- Wet'n'Wild MEGA LINER [Black]
- M.A.C. Lippie [Russian Red]
- Revlon Eye Palette [White]

I find it takes some time and practice to get a good cat eye down, I'm still in the process of learning this so forgive me if it's a little messy /: If you guys know of any tips or tricks for the liquid liner, I'd love to know!

Todays Face

The Kardashian sisters were behind todays face I always (almost) adore their makeup, they wear everything so well from sexy smokey eyes to fresh pink lips. Here are some photos I used for inspiration, and how I created my own Kardashian look!

Products Used:

- MAC Select SPF 15 [NC37]

- Fit Me Foundation [220]

- MAC Cream Colour Base [Pearl]

- bareMinerals Contour [Fresh]

- MAC Sheertone Blush [Springsheen]

- bareMinerals [Mineral Veil]

- Sephora Palette (stars * are over the colors used, they have no names)

- NYX Black Kohl Liner

- L'Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black

- MAC Lipstick [Myth]

For this look, I concentrated mostly on perfecting my cheeks and skin, because that is what I always find myself envying when seeing the Kardashians. I wanted to go for a pinky peach cheek with lots of sheen to provide that glamour glow we all know I can't get enough of.

Step 1 FACE:  Always make sure to properly prep your face for makeup. For me, this includes, cleansing, and moisturizing and using Fix +. Give this about ten (10) minutes to set and dry properly. Now, I was looking for a smooth sheer coverage foundation so I went with M.A.C. Select SPF 15 in NC37, for definition, I applied a darker foundation (Fit Me in 220) to the frame of my face. This is a technique that allows light to reflect from the center of your face and it gives a really beautiful effect. Just make sure the darker color isn't too  dark and also be sure to blend, blend, blend! Next, I patted M.A.C. Cream Colour Base in Pearl onto the apples of my cheeks, cheekbones and bridge of my nose. I like to use my fingers for this because it gives a glow, but a real natural one. Finally, I used bareMinerals Fresh into the hollows of my cheeks and all around my face.

Step 2 CHEEKS: Again, this is where I wanted the most focus to be so I use a few different products to create a one-of-a-kind blush that's perfect for my skin tone. First I popped on a layer of M.A.C Sheertone Blush in Springsheen, after that I whipped out my new Sephora palette and used the creamy peach / orange to provide the real color. After this I used the lightest color in the palette for extra highlight. I ran it over the blush I already applied and right above my cheekbones. Don't forget when you're finished with your face makeup to set it with a powder, I used bareMinerals Mineral Veil.

Step 3 EYES: It's NECESSARY when applying eyeshadow to use a primer as your base. Find one that works for you and use the heck out of it! I use MICABELLA's eye primer and apply it with a concealer brush. Using a medium shadow brush I applied a light shimmery champagne color all over my lid up to the brow bone, just a thin wash of color, nothing dramatic. I also popped this into my inner corner to brighten and open my eye. I used a similar shade but it's a tad darker for an all over lid color. Then, I applied a matte brown to my outer corner and a little into my crease, using a M.A.C. 217 brush. To enhance this I blended a bronze brown into my crease and beneath my lower lid. I used an NYX kohl liner to line my upper lashline, as well as in both my top and bottom waterlines. I feel like the dark black against the whites of my eyes really makes them pop. And finally popped on a few coats of L'Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black mascara.

Step 4 LIPS: I mixed two lipglosses to create an earthy nude pink that I frequently see Kim Kardashian rockin'. Before I put the gloss on I ran M.A.C. lipstick in Myth over my lips to lighten them up a bit so the true color of the glosses would pop through better. I applied the gloss with a drugstore lip brush.

*NOTE: I put stars (*) over the products I used in the Sephora palette so you could color match if you don't have that exact one.

Final Look

Notice the glow radiating out from my cheeks, this isn't from the flash, it's a result of the Cream Colour Base layered beneath the blush, and then a powder highlighter over that. I really love using this technique.

When applying eyeshadow, another layering technique gives great results. If you use a white shadow pencil (like NYX Milk, or Urban Decay Yeyo) in the inner corners of your eyes and blend them with a liner brush. Apply your shadow as usual and then go over the areas where you put the pencil liner with a light shimmery shadow. This will guide lots of light to that area, brightening it up a thousand fold.
